About Stella
Stella is an open catalogue of AI characters. Anyone can browse the catalogue, read what a character is like before starting, and hold a conversation with it. Anyone with an account can publish characters of their own.
What a character is
A character on Stella is a reusable description of who a model should be in a conversation: a name, a portrait, a description, a greeting that opens every chat, and — for creators who want more control — a system prompt, personality notes, and example exchanges. The character card guide walks through each field.
What people use it for
Roleplay and interactive fiction, language practice, writing partners, study companions, interview rehearsal, and long-running original stories. Characters can be organised with lorebooks, and there is a guide on what makes a character compelling. Lorebooks feed background detail into a conversation only when it becomes relevant.
Bring your own model
Stella connects to the model provider you configure. Your characters, conversations, and provider credentials stay attached to your account rather than to any single model.
Community standards
Mature content is off by default, must be labelled by its creator, and is excluded from search engines. Every character carries a report control. See Safety & Reporting for how reports are handled, and the Terms for what is and is not allowed.
